My three-part mixed media art piece was accepted into an upcoming exhibition at the National Liberty Museum. The piece, which was inspired by the Freedom Rides of the 1960s and the subsequent history of the fight against segregation and for Civil Rights, combines painting and illustration using layers of paint, ink, acid-free paper, plastic and white tape. The triptych begins on the bottom panel with the freedom rides and rises up into the King years and Black Power Movement. I was inspired to embark on this art project after reading an incredible trilogy of books about the King years by Taylor Branch during quarantine.
Ultimately, I would like to create a much larger timeline of racial history in the U.S. in this style that extends from Reconstruction (or even earlier) until today. I’m seeking funding for the project with the goal of installing it in a museum or community center.
