After taking a hiatus from my Punk Rock illustration series I am back expanding on it. There’s something about a new political season that has me exploring the ways various generations of young people have rebelled against societal norms. As such, I’m delving much deeper into the music, the fashion and the messages of this movement, both through its history in New York City and across the pond.
My ultimate goal is to be able to showcase the original works framed on paper, some limited-edition prints and a t-shirt series at a gallery that is willing to explore the cultural significance of these works and what the symbols have come to represent through a broader cultural lens.
The series captures moments in time and focuses heavily on the way people communicate their tastes and politics on material culture and through personal expression. The fronts and backs of punk rock vests, for example, make up a huge partition of the series, along with portraits of people with obscured identities. These works are meant to be stark, highly detailed, very graphic and a tribute to anti-fascist ideology from the 1970s onward.
I paint them all with Sharpies. I purposely wanted to use one of the most common, easily attained ink marker to create these moments in time.
To subsidize the series I am considering special commissions.
Here are just a few samples:
